Jason Graves, the composer behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, has confirmed that the title features the first fully composed music score specifically designed for the franchise's multiplayer mode. In an interview with TechRadar Gaming, Graves noted that this represents a departure from standard industry practices, where online components are often treated as secondary to the campaign.

"As far as I know, this is the first time we've specifically composed a score of this scale for multiplayer for Modern Warfare," Graves said. "It's the first time the multiplayer gameplay itself has received so much love and attention. Normally, it's usually a bit of an afterthought, cobbled together from existing music from the campaign, maybe getting some original lobby music."

Graves, known for his work on titles such as Dead Space, explained that while he previously handled audio for Modern Warfare 2 in 2022 by repurposing campaign assets, the approach for Modern Warfare 4 was fundamentally different. The development team created discrete tracks for various game states, including lobbies, countdowns, kill streaks, and after-action reports.

The composer emphasized that the multiplayer mode possesses a "completely different vibe" from the single-player campaign. His objective was to capture the "forward momentum and pure adrenaline" inherent in first-person shooter (FPS) gameplay. Graves suggested that FPS titles do not share specific musical characteristics with other genres, such as fantasy role-playing games, requiring a tailored approach to audio design.

"A lot of my job is simply motivation and excitement, either before, during, or after a multiplayer match," Graves explained. "So I'm here to get you pumped up and ready for action, motivate you towards the finish line, and slap you on the back with a big swaggering beat when you complete your objective."

Regarding the broader philosophy of game audio, Graves stated that music must always serve to enhance gameplay. He acknowledged the "incredible history" of Modern Warfare soundtracks and expressed honor at contributing to two entries in the series. He argued that the most effective game soundtracks are those that inspire and elevate the core mechanics of the experience.

For the Modern Warfare franchise specifically, Graves aimed to intensify the player's sensory experience. "For Modern Warfare specifically, it should turn everything in the game that the player is experiencing up to eleven," he added, indicating a deliberate effort to amplify the intensity of the multiplayer environment through dedicated musical composition.
