Democrat James Talarico has defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race in the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections, marking a new political breakthrough for Democrats in a state that has been a Republican stronghold for decades. His victory ends a long electoral drought for Democrats in Texas and gives the party an important boost as it seeks to regain control of the US Senate.
At 37, Talarico is a Texas state representative, former public school teacher and Presbyterian seminary student. His victory marks the first time since 1988 that Texas voters have elected a Democrat to the US Senate. The last Democrat to win a Senate election in the state was Lloyd Bentsen. It also marks a breakthrough for the party at the statewide level. Texas Democrats have not won a statewide election since 1994. Talarico's campaign focussed on everyday economic concerns, including reducing the cost of living, and allegations of corruption involving Paxton, who served as Texas attorney general.
Paxton faced criticism over allegations of misconduct during his time in office. His political record and controversies became major issues during the campaign. Live Events Paxton, who had the backing of US President Donald Trump, sought to portray Talarico's progressive positions on social issues as out of step with Texas voters.
However, Talarico focussed on attracting independent voters and people who do not traditionally support Democratic candidates. He also presented his Presbyterian faith as an important part of his public identity, setting himself apart from conventional party-focused campaigning.
